We got back from our New York trip on Saturday. The Handbag awards were on June 18, and while I didn't win, the show was still fantastic, and my bag had an appearance on the CBS Early show on June 19.
We had such a good time in New York. I got some stellar photos of the Statue of Liberty, ate soup dumplings with my friend Kate Black, and swam at Coney Island. We also ate hot dogs and frog's legs at Nathan's, and found out that they get their tartar sauce from Marzetti's, which is about 2 miles from my house.
Oh, and Ellis Island. I spent a lot of time in that museum. Everyone should go there.
I made these two (or three?) years ago using a pattern I got from Martha Stewart. These were on the cover of her Halloween issue of Living.
It is now Halloween crunch time, meaning that this week I will be making costumes non-stop. I really love Halloween, and I'm planning a huge feast-like dinner. I also consider November 1st as the start of Christmas, so I'm excited about that too.

While I'd like to get a few bags knocked out this week, I think that will be put off in favor of Halloween and such. I want to figure out a way to hang pumpkins in my yard with clear thread (or wire?). That is all.

This is the first in Randi's new "Purses of Pain and Misery Series". It's pink and red vinyl. Randi's got a whole bunch like this planned.
The concept behind Purses of Pain and Misery is to develop an object that expresses complex emotions and takes the handbag into new territory. The practical intentions of the accessory are subverted by deeper issues such as loss, suffering and loneliness. The container for our personal belongings becomes a symbol for our emotional state of being. The series is influenced by punk-rock song lyrics, haute couture, pop surrealism, designer toys, and pain and misery. These ingredients converge to create a product that eludes categorization and requires multiple interpretations.
These bags represent what we've done since yesterday. I also had some really thick leather, and I made two wallets from it. I like them well enough, but the leather was so thick, it caused the machine to skip stitches on the corners, so I won't be listing them anywhere. I've decided that I won't sew that leather anymore on the machine. It seduces me every time I go to buy purse hardware, and I must remember what an asshole it is.

This is so fucked up and awesome. We love this one. Right now, we have a few bags in the works that may or may not get us kicked off of Etsy. Usually, when the ideas make us laugh so hard we can't breathe, we know we have to make them.

I like to mill around in Lowes. "Mill around" = browse lazily through the store in Appalachian Hillbilly speak, or maybe everyone says it, I dunno. You should also pronounce the word "fish" as "feesh", and "wash" as "warsh", but I digress. I spend a lot of time in Lowes. I like the fastener aisle, with all the chains and screws. I also really like the paint department, with all the stencils, brushes, stains, and lacquers. I have a tendency to buy stuff that won't fit in my car, because I think being in Lowes causes me to slip into denial. I like the tool section the most though. It's like a utopia of opportunity. I need to go to Lowes tomorrow. I need to get lights.
Randi made this little gem. It's inspired by the Super Mario world, and the pockets on the front are seriously groundbreaking. She's all up in your ass with this one. Check our Flickr for more photographs.
I made these. They were done last night, but I wanted to wash them to make them shrink before I stuffed them. I put the buttons in today. I also painted my garage doors, and built a new place to take photographs. I used some MDF and bead board I had hanging around, and I painted it a very light blue. I love the concept, and it works really well, but we'll see how the color works out. I would have liked to have brighter light, but it was later when I took these. I'm greasy and have paint in my hair.

I gave my husband this CD for Father's Day. I gave it to him early because I was so excited. He had the album when it came out, but it was lost.

has started her Golden Bug series. Using a side quest from The Legend
Of Zelda as inspiration, she’s handcrafting golden bugs and
reinterpreting them in handbags. This is the second installment, and I
think the little bug compartment is perfect, almost ethereal.
I’ve
been working on exciting projects as well, but I can’t quite talk about
them yet, and frankly it’s taking me down. I’m excited, and I can’t
keep secrets.
We also went to the Rose Festival today. I took quite a few photographs, and I plan to use them for some projects.
This is the progress I've made on my chair. I finished all the frame work, I stained and polyurethaned the feet, and I put the springs in. Today I made the attached cushion for the seat. It's filled with loose foam. There is no padding on the frame yet, so that's why it looks weird. Plus none of it is stapled down yet. I think I'm going to tuft the seat to keep the foam from migrating. The back cushion is for tomorrow, and it will definitely be tufted.
I made this little gal yesterday. It's linen, ticking and 1940's era reproduction prints left over from a couple quilts I made for my kids. I'm keeping the reason I made it under my hat for awhile.
